Northside cheer finishes third in state; Washington boys stay unbeaten

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Northside High School cheerleading team finished third in their division at the 22nd annual Cheerleading Invitational on Saturday at the Raleigh Civic Center.

The Panthers had a final score of 41.05 to finish behind winner Princeton (56.65) and Coastal Plains Conference foe East Carteret (53.1) in the Varsity Performance Medium/Large Division 2.

3rd at States today, so proud of these ladies and their routine!!! I love them all so much!,” Northside cheer coach Jackie Small said in a Facebook post to the Northside Facebook page.

Washington basketball wins tourney game

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — Chaise Smith led four players in double figures with 32 points in an 87-73 win over Northern Nash on Saturday at the Good Guys vs. Cancer Showcase at First Flight High School.

The Pam Pack (3-0) blew open a close game in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Knights (2-1) 28-19 to wrap up the win. Javon Williams added 25 points while Jarryn Payne had 12 and Jacob Daniels had 10.

Christian Barnes led Northern Nash with 25 points.

Washington goes to Hertford County Tuesday and hosts D.H. Conley on Friday.

Northside wraps up flag football regular-season title

VANCEBORO, N.C. — Northside’s flag football team wrapped up the Big 12 Conference East regular-season title after going 3-0 at West Craven High School on Saturday.

Northside beat Havelock in the first game to break a tie in the regular-season standings. The Panthers then beat West Craven and New Bern to wrap up a 9-1 record.

Northside will be one of the teams playing in the conference championships this Saturday in Greenville.

Washington swimming places second

Washington’s swim team placed second to West Carteret at last Saturday’s meet at the Hildred T. Moore Aquatic & Fitness Center in Washington.

West Carteret’s boys had nine gold medals and finished with 146 points. Washington had two gold medals and six silver medals for 64 points.

Tyson Miller had a gold (100-yard backstroke) and three silvers to finish with 12 points, good enough for second place overall. Wayland Mitchell was third with a gold (100-yard butterfly) and two silvers.

Washington’s girls outpaced West Carteret with six gold medals and five silver, compared to West Carteret, which had five gold, five silver and five bronze. The bronze-medal finishes helped the Patriots win the meet, 116-87.

Aubrey Woolard won gold in four races (100 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 200 medley relay, 400 free relay).

Terra Ceia posts sweep

Terra Ceia’s Adrian Persons had 24 points and Ryan Ange added 22 as Terra Ceia beat Mt. Calvary Christian Academy, 68-21, on Friday.

Terra Ceia led 34-8 at the half to improve to 6-2 on the season.

Terra Ceia’s girls improved to 3-3 after a 44-29 win.
