Gabe Foreman certainly looked the part of someone who had reached a milestone.
He was handed and wore a shiny cowboy hat as he held up a banner celebrating his 100th career victory last Thursday in a tri-meet with First Flight and West Craven. In the background, his teammates each had “100” signs that helped mark the special occasion.
Foreman is having another stellar season of wrestling. His other goals have not changed. He still is aiming for a successful run that will hopefully end in him winning a state title in his weight class. He finished third in the state last season.
He spoke about those things and much more:
1. Obviously, 100 wins, that’s very impressive, especially being a junior. Talk about that first off, because you had to kind of work a little harder to get that tonight.
“Yes, sir. I mean, it’s just been – this season has been kind of a rocky start. I’ve been coming out of football season dealing with a little bit of sickness and injury, so I’ve had kind of a late start, but it’s a great milestone to make me feel like I’m back in the game. And a great coaching staff really pushing me to that level.
2. Tell me about that coaching staff. They’ve worked with you individually and worked with the team itself. You can hear them yelling and telling specific things for everybody to do.
“So our coaches are great at just making us stick fundamentally strong. So the biggest thing with our team is not doing anything crazy out there, just sticking to what we’re good at, getting tough really.
“We do a lot of just not only physical conditioning but mental conditioning in practice. Our coaches are just in our face, in our ear, lifting us up and pushing us forward.”
3. Was there anything specifically that got you into the sport? Was it somebody or something previously that kind of sparked your interest?
“I’ve been wrestling since middle school (at P.S. Jones), and I just wanted another sport to do, and it just clicked.”
4. How many of the guys have carried over from P.S. Jones like you did, and what kind of a bond has that developed?
“A good majority of our guys have fed over from P.S. Jones. Even some of our guys that just graduated, they’ve come back and they’ve watched, and they’re here tonight, and I’ve known them since middle school. I’ve been wrestling with them, so there’s a great bond just training with guys for several years.”
5. So what kind of motivation is that for you from here on out as far as preparing for individuals?
“So as an individual, I took third last year in the state. So my biggest thing is just get higher than third and just keep trying to win as much as possible, keep scoring points, and listen to the coaches.”
