Washington, NC – The Washington Harbor District Alliance (WHDA) is proud to announce that William “Bill” Cummings has been named the City of Washington’s 2024 North Carolina Main Street Champion. This prestigious honor is awarded annually to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and made significant contributions to the revitalization of their downtown communities.

Cummings was selected for his dedication and tireless efforts in transforming downtown Washington into a vibrant hub of activity, commerce and culture. His work has been instrumental in preserving the city’s historic charm while fostering a thriving environment for local businesses and visitors alike.

“Bill embodies the spirit of our community, consistently going above and beyond to ensure downtown Washington is a welcoming and thriving space,” emphasized Chris Furlough, President of the WHDA Board. “His leadership and unwavering dedication inspire us all, and this recognition is a well-deserved tribute to his efforts.”

During his 13 years on the WHDA Board, Cummings has played a key role in several transformative projects. He served as the project manager for the renovation of the Harbor District Market, a cornerstone of downtown revitalization. Most recently, he went above and beyond by managing the construction of a state-of-the-art incubator kitchen, designed to support budding local entrepreneurs and elevate Washington’s food scene. His hands-on commitment to these projects exemplifies his passion for creating a vibrant and sustainable downtown.

“The revitalization of downtown Washington is a testament to Bill’s vision and hard work,” said Jonathan Russell, City Manager for the City of Washington. “His contributions have not only enhanced our city’s identity but also strengthened its economic vitality. We are fortunate to have such a passionate advocate for our community.”

Cummings will be formally recognized during the North Carolina Main Street Champion Ceremony on March 13, at the Charles Mack Citizen Center in Mooresville, NC. This event, part of the NC Main Street Conference, celebrates the individuals who have been pivotal in shaping the success of their downtowns across the state.
