YEATESVILLE, N.C. — Northside High School’s varsity boys basketball team has proven several times this season just how good it can be. Tuesday, Southside had its moments and showed they are progressing.

Northside won 73-63 to improve to 11-2 overall. It was the Coastal Plains Conference opener for both schools and another page in the long-standing sports rivalry between them.

Southside dropped to 2-10, 0-1, and showed some growth spurts coming in waves. The Seahawks trailed 60-58 with 5:01 left after Josh Armstrong hit a jumper. Northside’s Chase Hewitt sank a 3-pointer from the right corner with 4:39 left before Armstrong responded with a putback with 4:03 left to cut the margin to 63-60.

After a timeout, Northside closed it out with tough defense and transition baskets, scoring 10 straight points before Southside got a basket from Armstrong in the final 17 seconds.

I think we had little foul trouble. Injuries are what’s killing us right now,” Southside coach Otis Harrell said. “Especially in our leading scorer on the team, he’s hurting (Armstrong).

“He’s a go-getter, he’s a winner. He loves the game of basketball, we play at spurts, so we get a little loose at times. But other than that, I think we did a great job.”

Early on, Northside went with what works quickly, playing good defense, transitioning and speeding up the pace. The Panthers led 22-14 after the first quarter, but the Seahawks hung around and trailed 38-30 at the break. Northside hit four 3-pointers that helped spread things out in that first half, but Panthers coach Jared Adams said there were other issues his team wasn’t doing right.

We just, we look good in spurts offensively, and we look good in spurts defensively,” Adams said. “What killed us tonight was a couple times when we built up that lead offensively, we got out of line on defense. And when we got out of line on defense, it just opened the center up. And then it created some easy ten-foot jump shots for them.

“It was just miscommunication between the guys. We’re gonna clean that up (Wednesday) at practice.”

The ups and downs continued for both teams in the third. Northside went up 55-40 after a two-handed slam by Nick Moore with two minutes left. Then Southside scored 10 straight points, including two 3-pointers by Jeremiah Satchell, to cut the deficit to 55-50 going into the fourth.

The Panthers once again spread the love on offense, with seven players scoring eight or more points, led by Nick Moore with 16 points and Malachi Moore with 15. Armstrong had 25 for Southside while Zymere Wiggins scored 19.
