Former Southside star recognized again by CIAA

CHARLOTTE — For the fourth time this season and second straight week, the CIAA has recognized former Southside High School star KaNyah O’Neal as the top rookie of the week in women’s basketball.

O’Neal, a sophomore business major at Fayetteville State, played a role in three wins for the Broncos, who improved to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the Southern Division of the CIAA. The Broncos beat Johnson C. Smith (77-62) on Jan. 13. After that, the Broncos topped Shaw (65-51) on Jan. 16 and Winston-Salem State (69-46) on Jan. 20.

A game on Thursday at home against Livingstone College was postponed due to the snowy weather conditions. That game was rescheduled for Jan. 28.

In the game against JCSU, O’Neal picked up three fouls and was limited to two points, two rebounds and three steals in 11 minutes. In the win over Shaw, she had 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals in 16 minutes. She then had seven points, two rebounds and two assists in 14 minutes. She was also limited somewhat with four fouls in the game.

For the season, O’Neal is averaging 6.4 points and 2.6 rebounds. She also is among her team’s leaders in steals (35, 2.2 average) and assists (26, 1.6 average)
