The Williamston Tigers advanced to the sectional championship game thanks to a 64-44 win over Camden in Wednesday’s second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A girls state playoffs (see related story).
The top-ranked Tigers (26-0), who are the only area girls team still playing, will play at 10th-ranked Weldon (22-3) on Friday. Williamston is the top seed out of the Atlantic Conference.
Weldon, the top seed from the Tar Roanoke Conference, ended Jamesville’s season Wednesday. The Bullets, the No. 2 seed from the Tideland Conference, lost 52-36. Jamesville finished with an 11-12 record.
Roanoke’s season also came to a close as the Redskins (17-11), the No. 2 seed from the Atlantic Conference, fell 56-49 to Jones Senior (17-7).
Four area boys teams will look to continue their seasons tonight as the second round of the boys state playoffs tip off.
In 1-A action, Roanoke (20-7), the No. 1 seed from the Atlantic Conference, plays host to Plymouth (16-2), the No. 2 seed out of the Albemarle Conference.
Mattamuskeet (13-6), the No. 2 seed in the Tideland Conference, will look to upset North Edgecombe (25-1), the top seed in the Tar Roanoke Conference, on the road.
The Roanoke-Plymouth and Mattamuskeet-North Edgecombe winners play for the sectional championship Friday.
The Creswell Tigers (17-2), the No. 1 seed in the Tideland Conference, will play host to Princeton (18-8), the second seed from the Carolina Conference. Creswell advanced after taking a 59-34 win over Cape Hatteras on Tuesday.
Williamston (8-17) was among five area teams to lose in the first round on Tuesday. The Tigers fell 84-75 to Lakewood.
Washington, Jamesville, Southside and Columbia also lost in the first round.
