Mrs. Peggy Petts Fitch, 93, died March 21 at her home at 613 E. Main St., Washington. Mrs. Fitch was born in Sydney, Australia, on July 8, 1914. She was the daughter of the late Charles Hammond Dempster and Marjorie Petts Button Dempster of Tasmania.
Survivors include a daughter, Deborah F. Christner and husband Henry E. Christner, of Washington; two grandchildren, Brooke C. George and Beau G. George, both of Durham; two step-grandchildren, Jessie D. Teller and Henry H. Christner, both of Richmond, Va.; and one step great-grandchild, Annabelle K. Teller, also of Richmond. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank C. Fitch of Tampa, Fla., and a daughter, Lisa Fitch McAvoy, of Tampa.
Mrs. Fitch retained her British demeanor and love of English culture until her death. She was known for her wit and curiosity, and she had many interests. She loved animals, music, gourmet cooking, reading and working in the garden. Mrs. Fitch moved to the United States after World War II. She met her husband-to-be, a U.S. Army Air Corps navigator based in the Phillippines, in 1943. They were married in Sydney in 1945. She lived in Detroit and Washington, D.C., before settling in Tampa in 1954. She moved to North Carolina in 2001 after the death of her husband.
