Mrs. Genevieve Carrow Baker, age 92, a former resident of 711 East Main Street, Washington, died Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Presbyterian Home of Florence, South Carolina.
A funeral will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the First Church of Christ of Washington officiated by Ray West. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Mrs. Baker was born on September 23, 1915 in Beaufort County, daughter of the late Jimmy G. Carrow, Sr. and the late Estelle Bennett Carrow. She married Jesse E. Baker on May 10, 1942 who preceded her in death on iecember 1979.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, church family and many friends who were like family. Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by three brothers: Robert L. Carrow, Hardy R. Carrow and Jimmy G. Carrow, Jr. and two sisters: Eloise C. Sasnett-Koeneman and Velma C. Chestnut.
Mrs. Baker received her education at East Carolina Teachers College, now known as East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. In 1937 she received a B.A Degree in Elementary Education. She taught elementary education for forty years in the Washington City Unit. Her love for children and teaching brought out the best in her students and she is well remembered for her dedication.
She was a member of C.T.A., NCRSP, and a life member of the NCEA serving as president. She also served on the Pre-Retirement/Social Committee of North Carolina Retired Teachers of Beaufort County.
Mrs. Baker was a member of First Church of Christ of Washington where she participated in the Adult Bible Class, Adult Choir and Just Older Youth (JOY). She taught Vacation Bible School, Sunday School and also taught at the Roanoke Christian Service Camp. She was a volunteer in the public school, mental health and also was a member of the American Legion and VFW auxiliaries.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Monday April 14, 2008 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Genevieve Baker Continuing Education Scholarship fund at First Church of Christ, 520 East 10th Street, Washington, NC 27889.
