Trent Watkins was a fierce competitor behind the plate for the Washington Pam Pack baseball team.
Watkins, who was also a standout football player, was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident on April 7, 2004. To help keep his memory alive, Watkins’ parents, Wayne and Kim Watkins, present a “Watkins Athletic Award in Memory of Trent Emery Watkins” each year on the home baseball game that falls closest to his birthday (May 2).
Wayne and Kim Watkins, who were joined by a handful of other family members, presented the annual awards to Cody Cunningham (football) and Josh Woolard (baseball) Friday night at Futrell Field.
The award, a $500 scholarship, was presented to the two Pam Pack players just a few feet from home plate, where Watkins was so effective for Washington.
The athletes are selected by the coaching staff of their respective teams. In order to receive the award, the athletes must demonstrate strength of character and integrity; a positive attitude with the determination and drive to win; and an unquestionable dedication to the team.
Pam Pack baseball coach Darin Vaughan selected Woolard, his lone senior, as this year’s baseball recipient of the Watkins Award.
Woolard said he was appreciative of the award.
Washington football coach Sport Sawyer said Cunningham was an easy choice for the honor.
Cunningham, who will play football at North Carolina Wesleyan next year, felt honored to receive the award.
Watkins’ No. 8, which hangs on the fence in left field, has been retired by the Pam Pack.
