Mrs. Alma “Deane” Cutler Parker of 119 E. 14th Street, Washington, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at the age of 82.
A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2008, at the First Christian Church, Washington, conducted by the Rev. Joanne VerBurg and the Rev. Dr. Michael Price. The family will greet friends after the service at the church.
Mrs. Parker was born in Beaufort County on March 22, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Redding Cutler and Annie Juliette Congleton Cutler. Mrs. Parker was a graduate of Bath High School and the Nursing Program at Old Tayloe Hospital. After serving as a private-duty Registered Nurse, Mrs. Parker joined the Nursing School faculty at Beaufort County Community College where she taught Associate Degree Nursing for 28 years.
Mrs. Parker served on the Board of Directors at Tideland Mental Health and served as a volunteer at the North Carolina Estuarium. Professional memberships include the North Carolina Nurses Association, the Beaufort County Hospital Board and the Tayloe Hospital Nurses Group. As a member of the First Christian Church, Mrs. Parker has served as Circle Leader, Worship Chair, and Elder. She was a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship where she served several positions at both the local and the state levels.
In 1947, Mrs. Parker married George Lee Parker, who preceded her in death on April 4, 1990. She is survived by a son, G. Lee Parker and his wife Jane H. Parker of Lynchburg, Va.; a daughter, Annice (Ann) Washington of Cary; a foster son, George Gillikin and his wife, Jeannette of Fountain; five grandchildren, Sarah Parker Womack and her husband, Chris; Molly Parker, Bekah Parker, Kevin Washington and John Washington; and a sister, Doris Cutler of Washington.
Keeping with Mrs. Parker’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, a memorial scholarship fund for ministerial leadership and development has been established with the Christian Church in North Carolina (Disciples of Christ).
