Mr. Elmer Earl Cox, 67, of Wilmington and formerly of the Long Acre community of Plymouth, died Sunday, May 11, 2008, at New Hanover Hospital.
Mr. Cox was born in Washington on Aug. 30, 1940. He was the son of the late Merton S. Cox Sr. and Letha Ormond Cox. He was a 1958 graduate of the former Pantego High School. He served in the Marine Corps. On Nov. 9, 1968, he married the former Karen Welpe, who survives. He worked as a supervisor with Kelsey Hayes Co. in Whitesboro, N.Y., until his retirement. He then moved to Wilmington where be became a self-employed contractor. He was a member of the VFW. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca C. Schmitt of Boston, Mass.; two sisters, Helen C. Baynor of Plymouth, and Margaret C. Amy of Bath; and two brothers, Howard R. Cox of Kennesaw, Ga., and Merton Cox Jr. of Plymouth.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy C. Barron and Peggy C. Herring.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Acre Chapel Christian Church, 24597 N.C. Highway 32 North, Plymouth, NC 27962.
