Benita Chandler of Vanceboro had the winning entry in the contest sponsored by the Daily News to christen the newest section of the newspaper, which premieres today, General Manager Ray McKeithan has announced.
An assistant at Dr. David Howdy's dental practice in Washington, Chandler nabbed the $300 prize for coming up with the heading, "Pamlico Horizons," for a tabloid section each Sunday that will include a variety of news about local people -- and showcase creative compositions by readers.
Starting today, Pamlico Horizons will encompass many of the news items that traditionally had appeared in the Daily News' food section on Wednesdays: school news, Pamlico People and Pamlico Military. It also will feature youth sports photos and reports, club news and Daisy's Pets.
In addition, Pamlico Horizons will be the home for a new feature in the Daily News, the Mini Page, a current events publication designed for children.
Finally, for this new section, the Daily News is seeking reader submissions in the form of photos, poems, essays, drawings and travel stories.
Chandler says she came up with the name for the section after reading the list of items it would carry in the Daily News ad seeking reader help with the title. She wasn't the only winner in the naming contest, however. Bob McKeever of Blounts Creek received a $100 prize in a random drawing that included all the other contest entries.
Anyone who would like to submit an article or photo for Pamlico Horizons may bring it to the newspaper office at 217 N. Market St. in Washington or e-mail it to horizons@wdnweb.com. Jules Norwood, the newspaper's features editor, will be responsible for coordinating the content each week.
