It was a night of dazzling debuts for Washington as its spread offense looked sharp and so did its freshman running back Markel Spencer as the Pam Pack rolled past North Pitt 47-28 on Friday to win its season opener.
Quarterback Jimmy Williams ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, while Spencer tallied three rushing TDs, with one of them being over 50 yards.
After the game, Sawyer said it was a great to start off the season with a win.
“With all the hard work you put into the offseason, you really want to start the season on the right foot,” Sawyer said. “It means a whole lot and the guys are excited.”
The Pam Pack were happy to post 47 points and Sawyer said that was possible due to the team’s execution.
“I thought the offensive line did a good job and the running backs did a good job of hitting the holes. Jimmy did a good job of reading the plays and the wide receivers did a nice job of blocking,” Sawyer said.
“On the offensive side I though we executed pretty well. On the down side, we did have three fumbles for turnovers.”
Williams played under center last year as he guided the Pam Pack’s I formation offense, but on Friday Sawyer said he handled the transition to the spread pretty well.
“Jimmy has a lot of athletic ability and tonight he ran the offense pretty well,” Sawyer said. “Anytime you score 47 points the quarterback has done a good job.”
Also turning in a pretty good day of work was Spencer.
“He’s a young back who is learning and working hard,” Sawyer said. “He’s got a lot of speed, but the line also did a good job of blocking.”
While the offense was accruing points, the Pam Pack defense did a stellar job in keeping the Panthers from getting them.
“I thought the defense played very well,” Sawyer said. “We actually gave up two kick returns for touchdowns, so of the 28 points only two TDs were against our defense.”
