Mr. Joe Edward Garrett Sr. of 111 Gurkin Lane, Plymouth, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Wilson Medical Center in Wilson.
A funeral was conducted June 2, 2008, in Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ, Plymouth, with Bishop Leroy Jackson Woolard officiating. Burial followed in Ellis Lee Cemetery, Plymouth.
Mr. Garrett was born in Plymouth on March 11, 1928. He was the son of the late Phillip Lee Garrett and Fannie Davenport Garrett Overton. He was married to Rulie Brown Garrett, who survives. He worked as a mechanic at Weyerhaeuser Co. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a member of Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ, Plymouth, where he was chairman of the trustee board.
Survivors include his children, Peggy Woolard of Virginia Beach, Va., Joe Garrett Jr., Constancetene Garrett, Juanita Downing, Josette Hall, Johnnie Garrett and Leona Garrett, all of Plymouth, Regina Ore of Washington, Kurt Garrett of Raleigh, Pamela White of Greenville and Phillip Garrett of Norcross, Ga.; his adopted children, Mary Cooper and Shera Ruffin, both of Plymouth, Josette Hyman Paul of Hungtington, N.Y., Tonya Moore Mingo of Chicago, Ill., and Carol and Todd Middleton of Dodge City, Kansas; one brother, Herbert L. Overton of Richmond, Va.; four sisters, Mary Pierre Overton of Plymouth, Frances O. Williams of Queens, N.Y., Eva O. Rufus of Richmond, Va., and Isadora O. Watts of Greenville; 32 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Nathaniel J. Overton and Emmanuel D. Overton; one daughter, Lauralyn Garrett Wilson and one grandchild, Norman Wilson Jr.
