Mrs. Catherine Smith Chesson, age 89, a former resident of the Big Swamp community, Washington, died Monday, August 4, 2008 at Martin General Hospital in Williamston.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2008 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, conducted by Eddie Bowen. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. Charlie “C.J.” Gurganus, Stanley Gurganus, Phil Smith, Paul Stokes, Bobby Stokes and Steve Griffin will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Chesson was born in Beaufort County on August 29, 1918. She was the daughter of the late Millard Filmore Smith, Sr. and Lula Belle Boyd Smith. She was a 1937 graduate of Washington High School. Mrs. Chesson was a nurse’s aide, caretaker and homemaker. She drove a school bus and worked in the cafeteria at Old Ford School.
Mrs. Chesson was very active in her church and community as long as health permitted. She was a member of the Old Ford Church of Christ, Christian Women’s Sunday School Class, Charter member of the Circle #4 and American Legion Post #15 Auxiliary.
Mrs. Chesson was married to Andrew Long Chesson, who preceded her in death, November 14, 2001.
Mrs. Chesson is survived by a son, Henton Chesson and his wife, Janice of Washington; a daughter, Tracy Black and her husband, Terry of Washington; four grandchildren, Todd Black and his wife, Sara of Florence, S.C., Tana Jenkins and her husband, Clay of Oak Island, N.C., Russ Chesson of Flagstaff, Arizona, Jan Ellen Chesson of Washington; two great grandchildren, Walker Jenkins and Molly Catherine Jenkins both of Oak Island, N.C. and two sisters, Orpha Chesson of Ashland, Va. and Margie Cannon of Greenville.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Chesson was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Lee “Andy” Chesson; two brothers, Millard F. Smith, Jr. and J.C. Smith; and one sister, Eloise Stokes.
The family received friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, August 7, 2008 at Paul Funeral Home, Washington and other times at the home of her daughter, Tracy Black, 117 Gallberry Road, Washington.
