WASHINGTON, N.C. — Duart “Dhu” Jennette Johnston, 71, passed away at her home in Washington, N.C., on August 23, 2008.
Born on October 11, 1936, in Washington, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Alexander Tunnel and Mary MacLean Jennette. She was married to Donald Cameron Johnston on December 21, 1956, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Johnston graduated from Washington High School, attended Salem College and received her bachelor of science in nursing from George Mason University. She worked at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, was an honorary life member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder, was a member of the Addisco Book Club and The Colonial Dames of America.
She is survived by her brother, Mr. Alexander Jennette, of Washington, and sister, Mrs. Annetta Jennette Howell of Hilton Head, S.C. The loving mother of six sons, she was preceded in death by one son, Alexander “Sandy” Jennette Johnston. Surviving are sons Donald C. Johnston Jr. and wife, Sandra, of Hickory, N.C., William M. Johnston and wife, Liz of Greenville, N.C., G. Nelson Johnston and wife, Heather, of Wilson, N.C., Franklin P. Johnston and wife, Christina, of Raleigh, N.C., E. Angus Johnston and wife, Grace, of Greenville, N.C., daughter-in-law Lainie Johnston of Wilmington, N.C. and five grandchildren, Cameron, Susan and Holly Johnston of Wilson, N.C., and Emily and Katie Johnston of Hickory, N.C.
A service of remembrance will be held on Monday, August 25, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Washington, N.C. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Paul Funeral Home on Sunday, August 24, from 5 to 7 p.m and other times at the home, 305 Willows Court, Washington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, 1209 Brown St., Washington, NC 27889, or the First Presbyterian Church, 211 W. Second St., Washington, NC 27889.
