Trimane Goddard scored his first career college touchdown, coming on a 51-yard interception return as the North Carolina Tar Heels topped Boston College, 45-24, on Saturday.
It was the fifth interception for Goddard, which is a single-season career high. The touchdown return, coming 10 seconds into the fourth quarter, gave the Heels a 38-17 lead.
For the season, Goddard, a former star at Roanoke High School, has 34 tackles, five interceptions, three pass break-ups, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.
Goddard has 10 interceptions and 162 tackles in his career.
The Heels (6-2, 2-2 ACC) return to action Nov. 8 at home against Georgia Tech.
Hyman scores on INT return
Kenneth Hyman scored his first college touchdown as the Guilford Quakers beat Washington &Lee, 34-27, on Saturday.
Hyman had a 69-yard interception return for a score early in the third quarter, putting the Quakers up 24-17. He also had three tackles and a pass break-up in the victory.
Hyman, a former standout with the Roanoke Redskins, has 19 tackles, three interceptions, five pass break-ups and six pass deflections.
The Quakers (4-3, 1-2 ODAC) return to action Saturday in a 1 p.m. game at Randolph-Macon.
Coffield throws first TD
Jarret Coffield, a former standout at Williamston High School, threw his first college touchdown pass. It came for the North Carolina Wesleyan Bishops in Saturday’s 47-28 win over Shenadoah University.
The pass was also Coffield’s first college completion. He threw a 79-yard touchdown strike to get the Bishops on the scoreboard.
Nigel Rodgers and Micke’l Cahoon also played for the Bishops in Saturday’s win.
Rodgers, a former standout at Washington High School, had one tackle. He has 16 tackles and one pass break-up on the season.
Cahoon, a former standout at Creswell High School, had 2.5 tackles, including 1.5 for loss. He has 16 tackles, including 10.5 for loss totaling 44 yards, on the season.
Coffield is 1 for 3 for 79 yards and a touchdown from his quarterback spot.
Also, Floyd Moore, a former standout at Southside High School, has not recorded any tackles to date.
Wesleyan (4-3, 3-1 USA South Conference) plays host to Christopher Newport in a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
Marable gets three tackles
Jeremiah Marable had three tackles for the Elizabeth City Vikings in Saturday’s 39-9 win over St. Paul’s College.
On the season, Marable, a former standout at Southside High School, has 49 tackles, a fumble recovery, a blocked punt, a blocked punt return for a touchdown, a punt return of nine yards and two pass break-ups.
The Vikings (6-3, 6-0 CIAA) play host to Virginia Union in a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday.
Palmer has four tackles
Greg Palmer came up with four tackles for the Chowan Hawks in Saturday’s 51-36 loss to Johnson C. Smith University.
For the season, Palmer, a former standout at Northside High School, has 42 tackles including five for loss netting 18 yards, three quarterback sacks, two fumble recoveries (one returned for a touchdown) and one forced fumble.
Chowan (2-7, 1-5 CIAA) play at Saint Augustine’s College in a 4 p.m. kickoff on Saturday.
Jones has five tackles
Jamont Jones had five tackles for the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears in Saturday’s 37-24 loss to Mars Hill.
The former Washington Pam Pack standout, a freshman with the Bears, has 11 tackles, three pass break-ups, one interception (15-yard return), five kickoff returns for 135 yards (27.0 average) and one punt return (8-yard return) on the season.
The Bears (3-6, 1-4 SAC) play at Newberry College in a 7 p.m. contest on Saturday.
Prescott on Bobcats
Freshman Blaine Prescott is playing with the Lees-McRae Bobcats soccer team.
The former Washington High School star has played in 11 of her team’s games, starting three of them.
Prescott has one assist on the season. She has attempted eight shots on goal.
The Bobcats (10-8, 3-7 CVAC) play host to Southern Virginia on Monday.
Crompton on Trojans
Ashley Crompton has made three appearances on the field for the Mount Olive Trojans soccer team.
Crompton, a former standout at Washington High School, has not recorded any statistics.
The Trojans (6-10, 4-4 CVAC) play at St. Andrews on Wednesday.
Locals on Pitt volleyball
A few former area athletes are playing for the Pitt Community College volleyball team.
Michelle Bracey, a former standout at Williamston High School, has 103 kills, 61 blocks and 25 digs.
Lauren O’Neal, also a former standout at Williamston, has 26 kills, 28 blocks, 17 digs and seven aces.
Augusta Johnston, a former standout at Southside High School, has 34 kills, 17 blocks, 25 digs and two aces.
Pitt (17-10, 6-4 Region X Conference) plays in the Region X tournament Friday and Saturday.
Coffield still lighting it up
Elton Coffield is playing with the BSW Sixers in Germany once again.
The former Williamston High School and Mount Olive College star, who led the league in scoring last year, is averaging 26.2 points per game.
Barber playing in Japan
Joe Barber, a former standout at Terra Ceia College, is playing professionally in Japan.
Barber is averaging 13.0 points and 2.0 rebounds with the Sendia 89ers.
