Mr. Samuel R. Leggett

Mr. Samuel “Sam” Roberson Leggett, age 69, a resident of 942 N.C. Highway 171 North, Washington, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at his home.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at Snowd Branch Church of God officiated by pastor Jerry Waters and Bishop Ernest Bowes. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Ed Dixon, Johnny Leggett, Tommy Lilley, Ricky Brann, Leonard Earl Buck and Joe Puryear will serve as pallbearers. Presley Eley and Billy Joe Arnold will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Samuel “Sam” Roberson Leggett

Mr. Leggett was born in Beaufort County on June 10, 1942, son of the late Samuel Stewart Leggett and Beatrice Roberson Leggett. On Aug. 10, 1962, he married the former Barbara Cox, who survives. Mr. Leggett was employed with National Spinning as an engineer and later in maintenance. He retired Aug. 23, 2011, with 51 years service. Mr. Leggett loved to farm in his spare time. He was a member of Snowd Branch Church of God and served in various capacities including Sunday School superintendent for 47 years, Pastor’s Council, C.E. Board, and Trustee. Mr. Leggett was a charter member of the Old Ford Volunteer Fire Department, serving as a volunteer fireman, treasurer and chairman of the board of Directors. He was a long time member of the Old Ford Ruritan Club.

In addition to his wife Barbara, of the home, he is survived by his daughters:  Cindy Leggett Waters and husband Steve of Pinetown, Mary Ann Knox and husband Joe of Washington; his grandchildren: Caroline Woolard of Greenville, Joseph Samuel Knox, Samantha Ann Knox and Katrina Knox, all of Washington, and his great-grandson: Levi Pullen of Virginia Beach, Va.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother: James Morgan “Frog” Leggett.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Snowd Branch Church of God and other times at the home.
