Mr. James Earl “Bird” Howell, 67, of 1817 W. Main St., Williamston, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Walker Funeral Home, Williamston, with the Revs. James Dixon and Roger Leggett officiating. Burial will follow in Martin Memorial Garden with military honors.
Mr. Howell was born in Martin County on April 1, 1941. He was the son of the late Roland Mayo and Elsie Harrison Howell. He was an Air Force veteran. He was married to Janice Jenkins Howell, who survives. He retired after 32 years of service as a telecommunicator with N.C. Highway Patrol. He then began his service with Walker Funeral Home until his death. He owned Birds Nest Frame Shop, coached youth baseball and was a volunteer Williamston fireman. He was a member of Cedar Grove FWB Church, where he served as a trustee and treasurer.
Survivors include one daughter, Jackie Andrews of Williamston; one son, James “Chris” Howell of Williamston; one sister, Jean H. Waters of Pinetown; one brother, Mayo Howell of Williamston and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Doug Howell, Marvin Howell and Ed Howell.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, Williamston, and other times at the home.
