Ellis Benjamin Gibbs, Sr., 87, of 34705 U.S. Highway 264, Engelhard died Wednesday evening, December 24, 2008, at his home after a lengthy illness.
Born in the Gum Neck Community of Tyrrell County on October 10, 1921, he was the son of the late Joseph L. and Frances Swindell Gibbs. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps at New Holland and later in the U. S. Army Infantry Division during World War II and spent his working years as manager of Engelhard Shrimp, Fish and Oyster. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Grove Church of Christ.
Pastor Russell Smith and Steve Bryan will officiate. Burial will follow in Fulford Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Maclyn Faye Gibbs; three sons, Ellis B. Gibbs, Jr. and wife, Connie of Pantego, Barry Gibbs and wife, Portia of Fairfield, Tommy Gibbs and wife, Amy of Burlington KY; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gibbs was preceded in death by two brothers, Lem Gibbs and Barney Gibbs.
The family extends to Community Home Care and Hospice a special expression of thanks for their care and support.
The family will receive friends at the home in Engelhard and at the church during the hour prior to the funeral service.
