Motorists who take to the roads of Beaufort County Saturday should not be surprised to be sharing the pavement with more bicyclists than usual.
The third annual DownEast Century cycle event will be held across the county beginning around 8 a.m. at Havens Gardens.
Roughly 40 cyclists will pedal their way down River Road, past Pamlico Plantation to Goose Creek State Park, working their way to the Bayview ferry landing en route to Pinetown.
Some will return to Washington while others will continue the 100-mile journey to Jamesville before returning to Washington.
This year’s event offers a 30-mile route, a 60-mile route and a 100-mile route. Most participants should complete the 100-mile ride in five to six hours.
Registration is open up to the start of event for a $20 registration fee. This year’s sponsors include Doctors Vision Center, Coca-Cola and Inner Banks Outfitters.
The purpose of the event is to promote cycling awareness, safety, physical health and the “joy to ride.”
Profits from this year’s event will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Washington to assist with Hurricane Irene relief. Donations are welcome!
