GREENVILLE — East Carolina sophomore Brock Young has been named to the 2009 Bob Cousy Award Watch List, which recognizes the top collegiate male basketball point guard annually spanning across all divisions within the game by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The selection criteria emphasize leadership, teamwork success and fundamentals as being critical parts for the game of basketball as a point guard.
Young currently leads the NCAA in assists with 7.8 per game. Through 15 games this season he has distributed 117 assists, which ranks as the seventh highest total in school history, which includes five games with 10 or more assists. The Raleigh native is also averaging over 10 points per game (10.8) and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.29.
Young and Tulane junior Kevin Sims are the only two Conference USA players on the 46-player list. Other candidates include: Darren Collison (UCLA), Stephen Curry (Davidson), Levance Fields (Pittsburgh), Ty Lawson (North Carolina), Eric Maynor (VCU) and Scottie Reynolds (Villanova).
Screening committees will review the nominations and reduce the number of candidates to a finalist group of 16 players. Twelve players within Division I and two players from both Division II and III will represent the finalist group.
A premier selection committee comprised of up to 30 members representing the following constituent groups: Hall of Famers, Head Coaches from each NCAA Division, Sports Information Directors and the media will be appointed by the Hall of Fame to review the list of candidates.
