Mrs. Mary Estelle Gurkin Smallwood, age 93, passed from this life to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 21, 2009.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday January 24, 2009 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington, officiated by Charles Latham. Burial will follow in the Gurkin Cemetery located on Long Ridge Road.
Mrs. Smallwood was born December 25, 1915, a native of Pinetown, NC. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Martha Gurkin. She was married to Robert Henry Smallwood, Sr. who preceded her in death. She was a member of Broadmoor Pentecostal Holiness Church in Chesapeake, VA and was a retired seamstress.
Mrs. Smallwood is survived by her children, Ruth and her husband, Carlos Stringfield, Phyllis Williamson, Robert H. Smallwood, Jr.; and Betty and her husband Roy Orsborne; her 14 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; her brother, Archie Rudolph Gurkin and a host of fine nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death, five brothers and two sisters.
The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday at Paul Funeral Home in Washington.
We are comforted looking forward to being reunited with her one glorious day.
