Mr. Luther Melvin Cratt, 87, of 102 Middle St., Williamston, died Monday, March 2, 2009, at Martin General Hospital in Williamston.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Walker Funeral Home, Williamston, with the Rev. Travis Wood officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Fairview Cemetery in LaGrange, with military honors. Mr. Cratt’s nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Cratt was born in Martin County on March 30, 1921. He was the son of the late William R. and Lullia Mizzell Cratt. He was a graduate of Campbell College. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II. He was married to Magaline Beach Cratt, who survives. He was a retired office machine technician. He was a member of West End Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Billy Whitley and Ronnie Whitley, both of Williamston; one daughter, Phyllis Everett of Garden City, S.C.; one brother, James Cratt of Robersonville; two sisters, Naomi Burnett and Sophie Mathis of Bear Grass; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph David “Buddy” Cratt, William Cratt and Wesley Cratt and one sister, May Harrison.
The family will receive friends today from 7-9 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, Williamston, and other times at the home.
