A Relaxing Diversion: Blackwater Band Makes Music in Columbia

Local music in Tyrrell County and the nearby regions might be characterized as “beach music.” Dancing. Partying. Relaxing. Blackwater, a local band fits this term. “The name comes from the Blackwater Swamps.  We played at Flemz  when people would play on open mic night,” said Ty Fleming, lead singer The band is comprised of Jimmy Fleming on drums, Ty as lead singer, Tracy Godwin on lead guitar, and Rick Armstrong on bass. Blackwater has played at many venues at the beach and continues to have regular gigs. Bands at the beach tend to get more consistent work in the summertime. “A lot of places close down for the season. They shut down in the winter,” said Fleming. New Years was a good time for Blackwater as they played at Legion Beach to a packed crowd. Other notable performances included playing at the Ride to a Wish Event and a biker festival in Kitty Beach. New Years’ night also included a music performance from another party band called Monkey Foot at the Columbia Crossing and Good Times Tavern. Fleming said he got his interest in music from his parents. “My parents would play at parties for friends and at cookouts. It just seemed like a fun thing to ...
